In 2021, I won the Dorothy Cannell Scholarship Award presented by Sisters in Crime (read more here). One of the fantastic benefits of winning was the opportunity to attend my first Malice Domestic Conference.

Postponed for the past two years due to COVID-19, the live, in-person conference was finally happening on April 21–24, 2022, in Bethesda, Maryland. Follow this article series to take a journey through my dream come true.

Day 1 – Arriving

This trip was my first to the Washington DC area. Flying over the Potomac River, the Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln Memorials, the National Community Church, and Georgetown Waterfront were absolute thrills.

When I landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, I met up with Agatha Award-nominated cozy mystery author Kaye George to share a cab to the hotel. The drive was gorgeous with the trees leafing and budding and the company fun and exciting. My Malice Domestic 2022 adventure was underway.

I was lucky to have a stellar roommate, Mo Walsh, and we got along wonderfully well. Mo is an impressive short story author, having won the 1998 Mary Higgins Clark Mystery/Suspense Contest. She’s a Derringer Award finalist and a past president of Mystery Writers of America’s New England Chapter.

My inner fangirl was just getting started! This weekend would hold so much more.

I arrived too late for pre-registration and most of the “Murdoch Mysteries” episode viewing, but I did make the after-showing discussion with Maureen Jennings. It was fascinating to hear behind-the-scenes details of one of my favorite mystery shows, from scriptwriting to author character insights to production.

On my way back to my room, I stopped in the lobby restaurant for a delicious bowl of crab bisque. Then it was time for this west-coast gal to get some sleep before the east-coast morning arrived too soon.

More Malice Domestic 2022 to come
